Art Journal, Bella Paperie, Quotes

Join me for some creative play

Looking for something creative to do this week?

On Thursday, I’m running another Learn for Free session at Bella Paperie about using the Gel Press plates. Pop in any time between 10am – noon and get ready to soak up some knowledge, no need to book.

You are invited to bring your questions as you will have a chance to pick my brain about monoprinting! If you happen to miss it, I’ll also be demoing with the Gel Press at our Paper Craft Trail on May 5.

On Friday, I’ll be teaching an art journal class centred around the beauty of abstract flowers. After all,

The Earth laughs in flowers…

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

it’s one of my favourite quotes and one that springs to mind whenever I see beautiful bunches of flowers or joyfully planted gardens. Why not put some happiness into your art journal with this abstract floral page?

This class will start with a textured page based on printed paper napkins and then we will build a beautiful bunch of flowers on top that will be wonderfully touchable. If you did a similar class with me previously, the techniques used for this one are quite different.

If you already art journal – bring along your usual kit, if not check the requirements list for a guide on what to bring. You will need an approx. A4 sized journal to begin with – please check in store for details. We would love to know where you are at with mixed media so let Deb know when you book in – absolute beginners are very welcome but the more experienced will find something to challenge them in each class.

We will be working in an A4 sized journal and please have on hand –

  • Paper napkins with all over types of designs. Abstract flowers and subtle pattern collages will work best and I will have some to share.
  • A variety of acrylic paints, particularly in flower colours plus some suitable for the background
  • A variety of paint brushes including a wide one suitable for matt medium
  • Black Stabilo or black watercolour pencil – Bella Paperie now has these in stock
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • White gesso
  • Liquitex Matt medium
  • Paint palette – one with separate wells will be very useful
  • Paint spatula
  • Non–stick craft mat
  • Spray bottle for water
  • Baby wipes
  • Paper towel
  • Container for water
  • Heat tool
  • I will provide the cheesecloth, book paper & tissue paper

Bella Paperie is located at Shop 33, 302 South Pine Road, Brendale. Phone 3205 5911 to book. Class runs 10am – 2pm, April 27 and costs $30 with some supplies provided.

Mixed Media Art Journaling Workshop – Courage is…

Do you have the courage to leap into pattern making without the end result in sight?

Why not join me this Sunday at Bella Paperie as I share my favourite pattern taming techniques to help you create a page that you love. They are sure to become techniques that you will return to many times in your mixed media journey.

We will start the class with a play session using our Gel Press plates and then I’ll guide you through calming the myriad of patterns into wonderfully, drippy shapes. To finish we will have fun doodling and adding yet more patterns and complete the page with a quote.

If you already art journal – bring along your usual kit, if not check the requirements list for a guide on what to bring. You will need an approx. A4 sized journal to begin with – please check in store for details. We would love to know where you are at with mixed media so let us know when you book in – absolute beginners are very welcome but the more experienced will find something to challenge them in each class.

Dina Wakley Show Us Your Media – January Challenge

For the last few months, Dina Wakley has been running a creative challenge based around encouraging us to get our fingers painty to fuel our creative spirit. The challenges are pretty open, with the main requirement being to use Dina Wakley branded products somewhere in the project. Dina provides inspiration in the form of a journaling prompt, quote etc.

For January, we were encouraged to create a project about being unstoppable…

I’ve had a little love-not quite like relationship with the Dina Wakley journal, the different textures seem to upset my process somehow, but over the past few months I decided I needed to just get in and use it without worrying how the pages turned out.  I’m beginning to really love it! Might even splurge on the new large size one Dina has released at Creativation.

I’ve created a page in my Dina Wakley journal and used the following –

  • Dina Wakley paints – umber, cheddar, fuchsia, black
  • Distress Oxide inks – various
  • Darkroom Door stamps – Compass Eclectic, Paris Postcard & Bold Arrows
  • Prima – imagery

You can find challenge entries via the hashtags of #showusyourMEdia & #rangerink Perhaps you would like to play along next month? Let me know if you do!

Shimmery Cards with Lindy’s Stamp Gang Magicals

Why not join me for a card making class this weekend at Bella Paperie? We will be playing with Magicals watercolour powders from Lindy’s Stamp Gang to create a beautifully shimmery set of cards. The brilliance of Magicals may be a little too bright for some (is that possible?) so I’ll share how to tone it down to suit personal tastes. Magicals are perfect for someone who wants to dabble in watercolours that shimmer and I’ll teach you how to colour with them in a lovely, loose style.

Supplies to bring:

  • Usual cardmaking kit including dauber, wet glue, foam adhesive & sharp scissors
  • Black permanent ink (not Stazon)
  • Clear Versamark ink
  • Clear embossing powder

Darkroom Door Stencil Blog Hop

Recently, Darkroom Door released a brand-new product – stencils! I was lucky to be given a few to play with and have been creating happily. The stencils come in two sizes – small (4½” x 6”) and large (9” x 12”) and are lovely and sturdy, so perfect for anything you want to throw at them.

Make sure you stay with me until the end of the post for some exciting giveaway news, but first I’d like to share some of the projects I’ve created recently.

The small stencils are perfect for cardmaking. I stencilled the small Darkroom Door Wildflowers using Dina Wakley black gesso over a sunset toned background created with Distress Oxides. The black images make a beautiful silhouette that can be accented with a brightly coloured butterfly and quote.

The Mesh Background and Texture stamps and ones I constantly reach for, so I was very excited to see these turned into stencils. The small one is so useful for adding instant texture to a background for a quick card or tag. It was easy to stencil into the background of the Darkroom Door Tulips Photo Stamp. A touch of pearlescent Gelatos to colour the flowers and I had unique, pretty card.

I’ve also used small Mesh stencil for this tag.

Who could resist letting this little birdie have his freedom? I’m kind of in love with creating backgrounds and liquid to go into mini jars using Distress Oxide inks – can you tell?

Although ‘small’ the smaller sized stencils are great for art journaling and the focal images make creating a page easy. I’ve simply stencilled the small Wildflowers using Dina Wakley black gesso across a drippy, messy background in my journal added a few words that kinda make sense and it was done.

The larger sized stencils very versatile as well. I stencilled over a messy collaged background with the large Mesh stencil and matt gel medium to give a wonderfully textured effect for this page. Then a bit of colour and a sprinkling of stamped images and the page was complete.

Have you played with Dina Wakley’s new Media Journal yet? I am loving the different textures of the pages and created this super quick page using Dylusions Ink Sprays and the large Darkroom Door Wildflowers stencil. The yummy watercolour paper soaks up the spray but quickly releases it when sprayed with water through the stencil.

Now it’s time for a giveaway!

Be sure to visit each blog and leave a comment. Five lucky winners will receive 3 stencils of their choice! Winners will be drawn from comments left across all the blogs, so be sure to leave a comment on each blog for more chances to win! Comments received before midnight Friday 4th August are eligible to be in the draw. Winners will be announced Monday 7th August on the Darkroom Door blog and Facebook page.

A snuggle in a cup…my June mixed media art journal class

Feeling like a bit of creative play this weekend? Why not join me at Bella Paperie this Sunday for my monthly art journal class?

I’m a huge tea drinker so it seemed right to share my love of tea and cute tea cups with my mixed media art journal class.

This month we will create a sweet stack of tea cups and layer them into our journal. These cups are so much fun to create and use a bunch of different techniques that you can apply to other pages in your journal. I’ll also share some tricks for turning a simple tea cup image into a handy template for your journal.

We will be working in an A4 sized journal and please have on hand –

  • I will provide a set of tea cup images for use as a starting point but if you would like to use your own the cups need to be approx. 10cm wide at rim & 7-9cm high. You will need ‘profile’ type images.
  • watercolours & appropriate brushes – please bring what you have to paint the tea cups. Gelatos, watercolour powders or waterbased sprays in flat colours are a good substitute. We could also use watered down acrylic paints if necessary.
  • approx A4 sheet smooth watercolour paper (we have this in stock)
  • graphite paper if you would like to trace your tea cups
  • a couple of your favourite stencils with small patterns
  • small stamps to use for tea cup patterns
  • clear Versamark ink, clear embossing powder & white embossing powder (if you have them it will save waiting)
  • a pack of post-it notes or masking tape will be handy for masking areas of the tea cups
  • I will provide the quote I have used but if you would like to use an alternative, bring it along. Tim Holtz Chit Chat wording is fantastic to use.
  • Liquitex white gesso
  • Liquitex matt medium
  • pallet knife
  • approx. 1” wide brush
  • variety of smaller brushes including approx. #4 round if you don’t have paint pens. If you don’t have watercolour brushes, also bring an approx. #8 round
  • scissors
  • x-acto knife
  • self healing cutting mat
  • pencil
  • rubber
  • black permanent pen in a variety of widths if you have them. You will need a 0.3mm & we have Copic Multiliners in stock
  • paint pens/markers/gel pens in a variety of colours, if you have them
  • coloured pencils may be handy
  • white Sharpie paint pen or white gel pen
  • gold pen – either paint pen, gel pen or gold leaf pen will work or gold paint & fine brush
  • 2–3 matt acrylic paints in pale colours for background, I’ve used green & yellow
  • a couple of darker colours for background splotches
  • small sponges for paint
  • spray bottle
  • baby wipes
  • paper towel
  • container for water
  • heat tool

Bella Paperie is located at Shop 33, 302 South Pine Road, Brendale. Phone 3205 5911 to book. Class runs 10am – 2pm, June 4 and costs $30 with some supplies provided.

  • Butterfly stencil if you have one or something with an image you would like to add to your page.
  • Shimmery watercolour powders that will be used to paint the butterflies or image of our choice. Lindy’s or Ken Oliver metallic powders are perfect. I will have a limited number of both to share.

  • Liquitex white gesso
