Mixed Media Art Journaling Workshop – Fun with Sheeple

I love quirky images and the Sheeple stamps from Paper Arsty caught my eye recently so I decided to create a page around these fun, dancing characters. I’ll be teaching how to create it this Sunday at Bella Paperie and I’d love you to join me.

The class will start with a few basic techniques using the Gel Press to create a subtle background and then we will add some stamped imagery to enhance the page, finishing it off with a quirky Sheeple trio.

Mixed Media Art Journaling Workshop – Fairy Whispers

I came across a quote recently, ‘raindrops are fairy whispers’ and I loved the imagery it conjured for a journal page so I changed it up a little for my upcoming class.

I’ll be teaching how to create at Bella Paperie this Friday and I’d love you to join me. We will start with a fun painty play session using our Gel Press plates and then I’ll guide you through calming the myriad of patterns into shapes, finishing with a little doodling.

I hope you will join me in this leap into pattern making without quite knowing how the end result will look – every page will be different. Come along and I’ll share my pattern taming techniques to help you create a page that you love. These techniques are ones you will return to many times.

Do you have the courage to leap into pattern making without the end result in sight?

Why not join me this Sunday at Bella Paperie as I share my favourite pattern taming techniques to help you create a page that you love. They are sure to become techniques that you will return to many times in your mixed media journey.

We will start the class with a play session using our Gel Press plates and then I’ll guide you through calming the myriad of patterns into wonderfully, drippy shapes. To finish we will have fun doodling and adding yet more patterns and complete the page with a quote.

If you already art journal – bring along your usual kit, if not check the requirements list for a guide on what to bring. You will need an approx. A4 sized journal to begin with – please check in store for details. We would love to know where you are at with mixed media so let us know when you book in – absolute beginners are very welcome but the more experienced will find something to challenge them in each class.

We will be working in an A4 sized journal and please have on hand –

    • Gel Press monoprinting plate (I will have some to share but your own will save waiting time)
    • A variety of acrylic paints including some dark colours and black
    • A variety of stencils with different sizes of patterns for printing & stencilling
    • A variety of paint brushes
    • Pencil
    • Scissors
    • Black Stabilo pencil
    • Sponges for stencilling
    • White gesso or paint
    • Gold acrylic ink or paint
    • Black paint pen of medium nib size
    • White gel pen or fine white paint pen
    • Paint palette – one with separate wells will be very useful
    • Paint spatula
    • Non–stick craft mat
    • Spray bottle for water
    • Baby wipes
    • Paper towel
    • Container for water
    • Heat tool

Easy Acrylic Skins with a Gelli Plate

It’s my turn to share a project on the LuLu Art blog this week and I can’t tell you how pleased I am with how it turned out. I’ve created an acrylic skin using the Gelli plate and then added the beautifully layered skin into my art journal.

You know when you have a Gelli plate that gets so many, many layers of dried paint that they never seem possible to clean? This is the perfect technique for getting those plates clean and pristine again (ready to get gungy all over again!)

Let the Sky Fall

Whenever I sit down to create some Gelli prints, I always have an art journal out to mop up the excess paint on my plate. The prints from these ‘leftovers’ add instant texture to any background and provide the perfect starting point for a project.

Today I’d like to share an art journal page featuring some Darkroom Door stamps – Carved Birds Vol 1, Alphabet Medley & Chicken Wire.

The page features many layers of paint and ink. The birds were doodled on with gel pens & a white Sharpie paint pen to make them stand out from the background a little more.

You might not have noticed but aside from using the Alphabet Medley set for my journaling, I also used the smaller set as a background stamp.  I haven’t cut each of the letters apart yet – I think I might leave each of the alphabets intact so I can use them this way more often!

I have the habit of taking lots of step by step pics so decided to create a slideshow of the process.

A Gelli Printed Tag

I like to make the best use of all of the leftover paint on my Gelli plate and often print off a bunch of tags once my initial print is pulled. I’d like to show you what I have done with one of those ‘leftover-paint’ tags.

Here is what I started with – already it has a lot of texture and interest but it needs something more. I used a white crayon to colour some areas of the circles.  [Ignore that eyelet – I changed my mind about the design half way through!]

Distress ink in a couple of different colours was sponged over parts of the tag. The darker the colour, the deeper the effect of the crayon resisting the dye ink.

Once the sponging was complete, the tag was wiped over with a tissue to highlight the crayon resist.

For more texture I stamped the tag with the Darkroom Door French Script background stamp.  Make sure the script is right way up if you use one!

I used butterflies from two different Darkroom Door sets – Wings & Butterflies stamped onto watercolour card so that I could use Distress markers and a water brush to colour them.

For a finishing touch I gave a strip of vellum a torn edge and inked with Chipped Sapphire Distress ink.  Words were trimmed from the Journey word block set.  Some Distress ink coloured, seam binding completed the tag.
