Mixed Media Card Class – Come & learn all about Gelatos

This Thursday, April 27 I will be teaching a mixed media themed class at Bella Paperie where you can learn more about the luscious Gelatos from Faber-Castell.

We will be stamping on fabric, stencilling, spritzing and smooshing to create a unique set of cards using a bunch of techniques that can be used over and over again.

Supplies to bring –

If you already have Gelatos, please bring them along, Ranger Distress Crayons are a suitable option if you have them instead.
Usual cardmaking kit including foam adhesive & liquid glue
Black archival ink
Fine permanent black pen (optional)
Distressing tool
Small spatula
Paint brush for gesso Variety of small brushes
Water container
Paint palette
Spray bottle
Baby wipes
If you would like to save waiting you are encouraged to bring your own stencils. I will be using the Tim Holtz Bubble, The Crafters Workshop Mini Spikey Circles & Craft Emotions Poppy Fields stencils. Other stencils with floral patterns and ones with random patterns will also work well with the technique.

Take a Moment

Today I’d like to share an art journal page that I created for LuLu Art using some self-carved stamps. Late last year, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer did a challenge to carve a stamp every day and I found it very inspiring and my fingers have itched to give it a go. You can find her posts here or do a search on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #carveDecember to find lots of inspiring images from other people.
As you can probably gather from my blog, I love my commercial rubber stamps! I won’t be letting them go any time soon but this project was a great inspiration starter and I know I’ll be doing more.
Stamp carving is a perfect skill for when you have that ‘I just need….’ dilemma during a project. Check out the little collection I made during my carving stint –

A word of warning – stamp carving tools are sharp! Keep the blade pointed away from you, work in a well-lit area and go slowly until you get a feel for the rubber. I actually learnt to carve timber as a teenager so found it all came back very quickly but the process is really simple – and lots of fun!

29 Days of Christmas Inspiration #19

Today I’d like to show you a cool technique using Gelatos. The background for this card was made by first stamping cardstock with Darkroom Door Music background using Versamark ink and embossing with clear powder.

Scribble some red Gelato over the image and either rub with a finger or spread colour with a wet paint brush. For this one I added a touch of gold Perfect Pearls to the water to create a lovely shimmery effect.

Stamp three small trees using Darkroom Door Stitched Christmas and green ink and trim closely. Mount onto cardfront and add a tiny button as an accent. A Merry Christmas greeting finishes it off.

Hope this sweet card makes up for missing a day. Oops…

Becoming a Butterfly

Last week it was my turn to share a project on the LuLu Art blog and I’ve chosen to use a set of brand new Dina Wakley stamps to create an art journal page. I tend to love anything insect themed so these were perfect for the page I had in mind.

This page caused me to muse on the theme of transformation and what it can mean to each of us. It can be learning a new skill, taking on a new challenge, making new friends or making a major life change. Often, we don’t realise how big the change is until it is well past.

Scrap Around the World Blog September Challenge

During the month of September, Darkroom Door are sponsoring a prize on the Scrap Around the World blog and once again the design team have been invited to participate. This time the challenge image was certainly challenging with no clearly related Darkroom Door products to feature – it really caused me to put my thinking cap on for something different!

This was the beautiful challenge image, put together by Amy Voorthuis. I ended up being inspired to create two projects.

I created this layout to feature a few photos from our recent visit to Hobbiton during a family holiday in New Zealand. The design was inspired by the books and brown/grey neutrals of the challenge image. Hobbiton was an amazing place, so true to the imagery described in the books. As a huge Tolkien fan in my teens it was fabulous to visit. We took 340 photos during the morning of our visit and I printed 100 – only another 97 to scrap!

This layout was started with a spattering of watery Distress paints to give some colour and texture to the black cardstock. The Paint Splats were ‘inked’ with picket fence Distress Paint then stamped all over the page. The ruled lines are from the Calendar set and tore around the edges, inked and then stamped with the Coffee Stain stamp. I also ripped some text paper into smaller pieces and did the same thing to age them a bit. I’ve kept my Scratched Alphabet whole so it was a little painstaking to ink each letter with white Distress Paint but the effect was worth it.

A coat of Distress Crackle added some instant texture and helped the letters stand out a bit. Before adhering the photos, I stamped the Stone background stamp in a few spots with black ink. A quote from The Hobbit finished it off.

My next project is completely different!

This page was inspired by the soft pinks and greys of the mood board, the idea of fairy tales & fairy godmothers & the fantasy of an inanimate object (the dress form) coming to life.

To start this page I scribbled with some pink toned Gelatos in a vague backwards L shape and spread the colour with white gesso. The gesso lightens the tone of the Gelato colour and adds some permanency to the water-soluble product. A touch of grey Gelato added another dimension to the background.

Layers were built with patterned paper, paper doyleys, stamped tissue paper (French Script & scissors), fabric, buttons and other ephemera. The focal image was collaged from the stamped dress form (Dressmaker set) and a butterfly (Butterflies set) – it looked so sweet accented with tiny pearls!

Darkroom Door & Art Journey Blog Hop–Day 5

I couldn’t wait to create with the Art Journey stamps I received in the swap – insects are one of my favourite types of imagery to work with and although I use butterflies quite a bit in my art journals, I hadn’t played with too many of my huge collection of bug stamps yet. This page came to me soon after I saw the gorgeous insect plate I received – add in a bit of hexy play and the page came together nicely.

I started by covering a page in my A4 size journal with torn dictionary paper, smeared one corner with some texture paste and pressed in the Art Journey Ripple stamp. Colour was added with Gelatos and Ranger Distress Paint.

The hexagons were punched from cardstock coloured with pearlescent inks and stamped with Darkroom Door background stamps. Once the hexagons were in place, some watercolour crayon was used to add shading.

The bees were taken from the Art Journey Insects plate. I stamped them onto tissue paper, adhered with matt medium and the once that was dry, colour was added with Copics. The poor bee flying into the sun got a nice set of clear wings as well!

I found some song lyrics which matched my page idea – I think they suit very well!

Have you seen the newest set of Gelato colours? They have a steampunk theme and are a lovely set of warm browns and a divine purple. They came in an order from LuLu Art yesterday and I couldn’t wait to play with them!

This page came together really quickly – some smudges of Gelatos, Tim Holtz rubons & stencilling with Dina Wakley paint and then the page was ready for stamping. I used Darkroom Door stamp sets – Paint Splats, Enjoy the Ride & Discover.

I love the imagery on this page – my eldest son is a cyclist so there is a variety of bicycles living in our garage.

A Summer Adventure

I live in the Southern Hemisphere, in what is usually a sunny Australian city but it has turned blustery and cold this week – Winter is here at last! Winter Solstice draws near, my to warmer temperatures as I created this cute birdie page for you. My page features lots of lovely texture, found words and a birdie or two.

Do you Instagram? My feed is a constant source of inspiration and peek into the lives and habits of others. Whenever it is freezing here, I can visit with my Insta friends enjoying a sunny day or a yummy dinner when I’m just getting up. My whippet dog Zed even has Insta friends! I love watching the adventures of our international doggy friends – makes me realise that whippets are such an amazing breed. I found one the other day that does a form of parkour!

If you follow my Instagram you have probably worked out that one of my boys is a keen mountain biker, or more specifically a downhiller. Downhill cycling is a sport where you take yourself to the nearest mountain track and throw yourself over the side in a race to the bottom by the quickest time. Crazy! But he loves it with a passion.

I created this layout to celebrate his recent achievement of a podium position for a downhill endurance race. For this one the aim was to complete as many runs as possible over four hours. Josh came third!

This month, Darkroom Door is one of the sponsors of CSI: Color, Stories, Inspiration, and I used Darkroom Door stamps on my page. Here’s the case file:

The idea is to use the above image, colour scheme and information for inspiration. For evidence I used – cogs, metal, bicycle and numbers and for testimony I journaled about something ‘mind-boggling’ but the inspo word ‘move’ was also inspiring. After all, Josh was on the move for 4 hours!

I started the page with a few swipes of Gelatos and used a wet Faber Castell sponge blender to blend. I laid my photos on top and marked out rough positioning for the next step.

A few cogs from the Darkroom Door Steampunk set and random partial stampings of the Darkroom Door Grid background stamp added a bit of interest.

I painted a couple of swatches of Distress Crackle to add a bit of texture and once dry rubbed it over with Gelatos – the Gelatos filled in some of the cracks to add an extra dimension of colour. As it was a mountain bike competition, I only wanted parts of the bicycle wheels sticking out from underneath my pictures so I inked & stamped only a portion of the bicycle. (it’s still the wrong type of wheel but oh well!)

A Tim Holtz number 3 reinforces Josh coming third – a bit of Distress Paint takes away the shiny silver to give a slightly enamel look. Some strip journaling and a title and it was done.
