Make Today Count

Eeep….seems my poor blog has been left neglected. Sorry readers, my year started with a bang and has continued to be busy. Time to refresh and restart this blogging habit I think!

The first half of this year has been filled with creativity in a variety of forms. In February, I started a degree in photography and took initial subjects in photography and drawing which set me up for a busy start to uni life but also gave me a pair of subjects that I was already comfortable with. Turned out to be a brilliant choice and I have loved every minute of my first semester.

It has been a little while since I sat down to play with no plan in place so I thought I’d share the results with you. Needing to concentrate on the final weeks of assessments meant only the ‘necessities’ of creative play were attended to, but teaching classes and creating design team project are luckily among the necessities! It was time to pull out my collection of The Crafters Workshop Stencils and have some playtime.

I’ve created this art journal page in my favourite Dylusions Dyalog journal which has lovely grids printed on the pages. Not sure what it is about grid paper but it has always been a go-to choice for notepaper. I started with a page that had been painted in calming blues and greens and stencilled over the top with Distress Oxide inks using the large circle stencil.

Next I gathered a bunch of painted & Gel Press printed scraps and stencilled all over them in a random fashion using acrylic paint. I layered stencilling and painting of small areas without a lot of thought to create busy looking pieces. For a bit of cohesion, I kept my paints to warm colours plus a blue. Then I drew circles of various sizes over all the pieces. While drawing the circles, I tried to get a mix of pattern and empty space on each.

Once the circles were fussy cut I layered them onto my journal page until I had a pleasing arrangement. I decided not to use the strongly blue coloured pieces. Some circles were layered over each other and I made sure I had a couple overlapping the page edges.

Next I stencilled over several of the circles using circular stencils and black paint. This helps give a strong pop of pattern and contrast to the page.

Some circles got just a small portion stencilled in black.

I used black and white paint pens to give the circles some extra line work and edged each of them with a sponging of black paint prior to adhering them in place with Helmar Tacky Craft Glue.

I’m lucky with the variety of stencils I own, I can usually find the perfect one for a corner – like the one I’ve stencilled using texture paste.

A Tim Holtz quote finishes the page.

Mixed Media Art Journaling – Abstract Textures & Found Poetry

Found poetry is one of the joys of serendipity – that magical result of leafing through some printed pages and just seeing what catches the eye. No planning, just following intuition to create something meaningful with words that fit together but perhaps not as they were originally intended.

Darkroom Door & Karen Burniston Blog Hop

Welcome to the blog hop of Darkroom Door & Karen Burniston!

Darkroom Door have teamed up with Karen Burniston to bring you an epic blog hop this week. It is sure to be inspiration overload as you hop along and join in the fun! Make sure you read to the end to find out how you can win some free product. A huge thanks to Darkroom Door and Karen Burniston for organising the hop and inviting me to play, its been huge fun to participate.

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you can join the hop by following the list at the end of my post. Each blog involved is listed and linked so you can ‘hop’ from one to the next easily, you don’t need to come back here, just follow from the post next on my list.

For my projects, I chose to use the Karen Burniston Katherine Label Pop-Up #1011 & Word Set 1 – Greetings #1002 die sets. Using a pop-up die makes the process of designing a pop-up card so easy! No measuring or fiddling, the hard work is all done for you. I love how the little birdie pops up as you open the card – makes a nice surprise for the recipient.

I paired the dies with the new Darkroom Door Garden Birds & Grid Texture stamps to create an asymmetric gatefold card. The patterned paper used for the front panels was a little plain so I added a bit of texture using the Darkroom Door Grid Texture stamp and Rose Madder Archival ink.

I love colouring images and the new Darkroom Door Garden Birds are great to colour with Ecoline markers. The teensy hearts from the Karen Burniston Katherine Label Pop-up add a cute finishing touch to the one on the card front;)

Check out how fine the detail is around the label die! Although I’ve known about Karen Burniston dies and their wonderful quality for ages, having some to create with was new to me. I enjoyed the opportunity to use them – they cut so beautifully and are really well designed.

I decided to do a second project and create a mixed media style tag. This time I’ve paired the large label die from Karen Burniston Katherine Label Pop-up along with the ‘Hello’ from Word Set 1 – Greetings with the new Darkroom Door Butterfly Note Eclectic stamp.

First up I created a background with texture paste & Darkroom Door Large Mesh stencil then smooshed Gelatos over it for a rich layer of colour.

The Butterfly Note stamp was inked with Distress Oxide inks – firstly with Antique Linen and then I went around the edges and parts of the centre with Candied Apple. I followed a fan-type pattern to give the impression of markings on the butterfly wings. I quite like how the effect looked when stamped and the wetness of the Distress Oxide inks gives you a little time to get the pattern right.

Both Darkroom Door and Karen Burniston will be giving away a prize packs, with winners randomly chosen from ALL of the blog hop comments received by Sunday, July 29, 2018. Lots of chances to win some goodies, so just leave a comment on this post or any other blog hop post to enter! Obviously, the more comments you leave the better your odds of winning.

Watercolour Class – Fantasy Feathers & Adapted Acordian Spine Book

Do you love using watercolour but not quite sure how to achieve cute feathers? This might be the class for you. Painting feathers are a fabulous way of learning different watercolour techniques. To complement the watercolour techniques, I will also be teaching how to fold an adapted accordion spine book that can be used to showcase your watercolour samples.

During class, we will be focussing on fine brush control, making washes, wet in wet, blending, abstract style and doodling.
