Mixed Media Art Journaling Workshop – Dreams Have Wings

Do your dreams have wings?

Perhaps your dreams are full of colour and texture and you would love to capture that feeling in your art journal? This might be the class where you learn to delve into another world and play with collage and paint for the pure fun of it!

Why not join me this Friday as we jump into the wonderful world of mixed media and art journaling. This will be the first of regular Friday classes featuring mixed media and art journaling at Bella Paperie. Although aimed as a ‘beginner class’, my regular students and ones familiar with mixed media will still find lots to learn and challenge them.

If you already art journal – bring along your usual kit, if not come along to this weekday class to learn what you might need to purchase as the materials list is a brief guide. You will need an approx. A4 sized journal to begin with – please check in store for details or we can provide a sheet of heavy watercolour paper to get you started.

For this first weekday class, I will bring along most of the supplies to share but please bring what you have from the materials listed to save time waiting. I have listed a kit of ‘basics’ that you will need to bring to every class. As always, the listed supplies are available to purchase from Bella Paperie before class.

We will be working in an A4 sized journal and please have on hand –

  • Chalk inks in pale flower & leaf colours (if you have them)

Shimmery Cards with Lindy’s Stamp Gang Magicals

Why not join me for a card making class this weekend at Bella Paperie? We will be playing with Magicals watercolour powders from Lindy’s Stamp Gang to create a beautifully shimmery set of cards. Darkroom Door Stencil Blog Hop

Recently, Darkroom Door released a brand-new product – stencils! I was lucky to be given a few to play with and have been creating happily. The stencils come in two sizes – small (4½” x 6”) and large (9” x 12”) and are lovely and sturdy, so perfect for anything you want to throw at them.

Make sure you stay with me until the end of the post for some exciting giveaway news, but first I’d like to share some of the projects I’ve created recently.

The small stencils are perfect for cardmaking. I stencilled the small Darkroom Door Wildflowers using Dina Wakley black gesso over a sunset toned background created with Distress Oxides. The black images make a beautiful silhouette that can be accented with a brightly coloured butterfly and quote.

The Mesh Background and Texture stamps and ones I constantly reach for, so I was very excited to see these turned into stencils. The small one is so useful for adding instant texture to a background for a quick card or tag. It was easy to stencil into the background of the Darkroom Door Tulips Photo Stamp. A touch of pearlescent Gelatos to colour the flowers and I had unique, pretty card.

I’ve also used small Mesh stencil for this tag.

Who could resist letting this little birdie have his freedom? I’m kind of in love with creating backgrounds and liquid to go into mini jars using Distress Oxide inks – can you tell?

Although ‘small’ the smaller sized stencils are great for art journaling and the focal images make creating a page easy. I’ve simply stencilled the small Wildflowers using Dina Wakley black gesso across a drippy, messy background in my journal added a few words that kinda make sense and it was done.

The larger sized stencils very versatile as well. I stencilled over a messy collaged background with the large Mesh stencil and matt gel medium to give a wonderfully textured effect for this page. Then a bit of colour and a sprinkling of stamped images and the page was complete.

Have you played with Dina Wakley’s new Media Journal yet? I am loving the different textures of the pages and created this super quick page using Dylusions Ink Sprays and the large Darkroom Door Wildflowers stencil. The yummy watercolour paper soaks up the spray but quickly releases it when sprayed with water through the stencil.

Now it’s time for a giveaway!

Triple Treat – Darkroom Door Style!

Earlier this year I was invited by the amazing Alison Bevis to participate in a full day creative workshop called Triple Treat. I’ll be teaching alongside Rachel Greig from Darkroom Door and Linda Drynan who has taught for Craft Giraffe for years.

Here is a sneaky peek of the art journal page that I will be teaching. It’s full of techniques and colourful texture.

It is sure to be a fun day, especially when it will be full of stamping techniques and all things Darkroom Door.  There will be three different classes with kits, lunch & afternoon tea plus a goody bag. Alison has been running these events in Brisbane for ages and I’m honoured to have been invited to teach. If you need to do some shopping, that will be well covered by a bunch of local crafty retailers.

Check out the Facebook page for details and book your seat if you are interested. Spots are almost full! If you are keen to know about the other events Alison runs, follow her page Alison’s Craft Events on Facebook.

Find Your Way…my July mixed media art journal class

Where will your art adventure take you?

Discover how much fun it can be when we turn basic acrylic paints into ink-like goodness. This class features a fluffy, colour streaked background and a watercoloured hot air balloon.

We will spend the class painting and collaging to create a one of a kind journal page that becomes unique to you. I’ll also show you how you can incorporate Distress Oxide inks into your journal pages. But don’t worry – if you can’t draw a hot air balloon, I have an easy fix!

We will be working in an A4 sized journal and please have on hand –

  • I will provide you with the reference image for a vintage hot air balloon. If you would like to paint something different please bring along some images to use that are printed onto photocopy paper. The image I have used is 10cm x 18cm so something similar size will be perfect.
  • Collage papers – only a small amount is needed & I’ll have dictionary paper for you to use
  • Border stamps or stencils
  • Distress Oxide inks in Broken China/Faded Jeans/Iced Spruce if you have them.
  • Liquitex white gesso
  • Pallet knife
  • approx. 1” wide brush
  • variety of smaller brushes including a small fine one
  • Graphite paper or similar if you wish to trace the image instead of drawing one
  • pencil
  • rubber
  • Stabilo or charcoal pencil if you have one
  • black permanent pen for doodling
  • matt acrylic paints in the colours you would like to use for a background (I have used shades of blue)
  • watercolours – please bring what you have. Watercolour powders and pencils will also work.
  • small sponges for paint
  • word stamps or stencils. Black rub ons will also work well.
  • non–stick craft mat
  • spray bottle of water
  • baby wipes
  • paper towel
  • container for water
  • heat tool
  • gloves

Bella Paperie is located at Shop 33, 302 South Pine Road, Brendale. Phone 3205 5911 to book. Class runs 10am – 2pm, July 2 and costs $30 with some supplies provided.
